Ukai

One of three cabins set within Cove Valley, a rewilding reserve on the edge of Exmoor — each one different, but bound by the same design language and spirit. Ukai takes its name from the old word for deep valley, and true to its name, generous windows frame the valley beyond while the layout creates distinct, well-defined areas within a compact footprint. A retreat that feels completely grounded in its setting, without a trace of the camping vibe.

Every inch was considered. The kitchen lines the back wall of the living area, pots hung to save cupboard space, open shelving displaying glassware and crockery. A table doubles as a games board. The bedroom door sits directly opposite the entrance — glazed, so even when closed your eye is drawn to the furthest point of the cabin. Timber-clad walls, bespoke joinery and antiques chosen for their patina and warmth give the space its character. We approached it like a dolls' house — the same threads that run through our larger work, scaled down and all the more potent for it.

The cabins were designed to be lived in, not just looked at. Muddy boots, woodland walks, coming back from the river — all of it was thought through from the start. Storage is built in and hidden away. Nothing was compromised. Available to guests through Cove Valley, Ukai feels worlds away — set deep in the Devon woodland, with beavers for neighbours.
